Dianne Chalmers of Forest Park died Feb. 27, 2004, at Southern Regional Medical
Center. She was a member of Ash Street Baptist Church. Services will be at 11

MAYFIELD Jr.
Bruce Wayne Mayfield Jr., 36, of Jonesboro, died Feb. 26, 2004. He was the son
of Bruce Sr. and Cassandra Mayfield of Locust Grove. Survivors other than his
parents include brothers Mark Mayfield of Fountain Inn, S.C., and Jonathan
Mayfield of Locust Grove. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, March 1,
in the chapel of Cannon-Cleveland Funeral Directors. Interment will be in

ADAMSON
Colie Adamson, 87, of Morrow, died Friday, Feb. 27, 2004. He was deacon emeritus
at First Baptist Church of Morrow and, along with his wife, was one of the
longest-living members of the church. HE WAS A VETERAN OF WORLD WAR II, SERVING
IN THE U.S. ARMY. Adamson was past mayor of Morrow, served as chairman of the
Clayton County Board of Education and was a board director at the Bank of Forest
Park. He opened the Western Auto Store in Jonesboro in 1952. Survivors include
his wife of 64 years, Thelma; daughter and son-in-law, Patsy and Aaron Mauldin;
grandchildren Matthew McLendon and Marci McLendon; brothers Hiram Adamson, Grady
Adamson; sisters Laverne Bailey and Emily Montalvo. He was preceded in death by
his brother, Joe.
Funeral services will be Monday, March 1, at 4 p.m. in First Baptist Church of
Morrow. The Rev. Stephen Cook, Dr. Bill Lewis and Dr. Jimmy Lewis will
officiate. Interment will follow in Morrow Cemetery. The family requests in lieu

Judy Parker Powell, 59, formerly of McDonough, died Feb. 29, 2004, at her home
in Brevard, N.C.
She was born Jan. 17, 1945, in Dayton, Ohio to the late Robert Miller Parker and
Mary Ellen Flatt Parker. Immediately prior to her recent illness, she taught
General Science at the Henry County High School in McDonough. From 1998 to 2003,
she was 4-H agent for Clayton County. A memorial service will take place at the
Jonesboro First United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 6. Survivors
include one daughter, Julia Gervasio and her husband, Marc, of McDonough; two
grandchildren, Jonathan and Benjamin Gervasio; and her husband, the Rev. Dr.
James Lee Powell. She is also survived by her mother, Mary Ellen Parker of

Marcella
Jean Schmenk
Marcella Jean Schmenk, beloved wife of James, fought a valiant battle against
cancer. She succumbed Friday, Feb. 27, 2004, surrounded by her loving family.
Marcella was born April 6, 1928, in Delphos, Ohio to Lowell and Ida Foust. She
was truly devoted to her family. Marcella became a mother figure to her three
brothers when her parents met an early death. She further proceeded to rear her
own three children (who could be trying at times).
Marcella role-modeled a strong work ethic. She embraced life to the fullest. She
was very active with the Lioness Club while living in Ohio. Then she discovered
golf. But more than golf, Marcella loved flowers. Her yard was a showcase of her
talent and passion. Marcella was preceded in death by her parents and brother,
Gordon Foust.
A memorial service to celebrate her full life will be conducted at 3 p.m.
Saturday, March 20 at Hampton United Methodist Chapel in Hampton, Ga. Survivors
include her husband of 57 years; children, Pamela Lourens, James Schmenk Jr. and
Craig Schmenk; grandchildren, Jeni Lourens, Kip Lourens, Nicholas Schmenk,
Derrick Schmenk and Kevin Schmenk; great-grandchildren, Alexis, Makenzie and
Mason Schmenk. She is further survived by her sister, Phyllis Schmenk (husband

Homer "Butch" Brookshire, Jr. of Fayetteville passed away Monday, March 1, 2004.

also survived by his sisters Teresa and Keith Harris of Huntsville, Ala., Suzie

Man killed
while avoiding dryer
Michael Ronald Hall's two sons are home now, trying to come to grips with
the death of their father in an accident that happened as he was bringing them
home from a baseball game. One (son) with a swollen jaw and some aches but they
ran some X-rays on him and didn't find any broken bones. The other son also had
some minor injuries. From the condition of that car they were very fortunate.
Around 10 p.m. Monday 43-year-old Hall, of Atlanta, and the boys, 9-year-old
Michael and 6-year-old Marcus, were driving north on I-75 from McDonough where
the Little League game was held. Just south of the Forest Parkway exit Hall was
forced to swerve to avoid a clothes dryer that was in the middle of his lane,
according to an official report. Witnesses said that Hall lost control of his
Isuzu Rodeo and it began to tumble. By the end of that free fall Hall was dead.
Investigators found the battered remains of the dryer, which was brand new and
still in the box, at the accident scene where it had been hit by at least one
car behind Hall's. Using serial numbers and other information on the dryer they
traced its origin to a Home Depot store on Jonesboro Road north of Forest Park.
But the trail stopped there temporarily when the store refused to let
investigators see the documents regarding the dryer. Police are expected to
subpoena the company for the documents Wednesday. Home Depot public relations
personnel did not return repeated phone calls seeking comment. One of the
mysteries surrounding the accident is if the dryer was purchased at the store
how it ended up in the south-bound lane of the interstate south of the store.
One question is whether it was bought at the store or on the way to the store
from some other facility like a warehouse. Besides the Forest Park store, there
is also one on Mt. Zion Road in Morrow near the interstate. Computerized records
from the store might show the purchaser, time of purchase and other pertinent
information. The Forest Park store closes at 10 p.m. Michael and Marcus were
taken to Southern Regional Medical Center for treatment. The boys were in the
back seat, wearing seatbelts, at the time of the accident. Hall had been an
assistant dean and director of the MBA program at Clark Atlanta University, his
alma mater, for more than a year, said Ed Davis, dean of the university's School
of Business. Davis also taught Hall when he was a student at the school in the
1980s, during which time Hall also met his wife, then fellow student Sabrina
Tucker Hall. Davis visited the family on Tuesday. "The boys are in a state where
they don't quite know what's going on," Davis said. "His wife is just
devastated." Hall "brought a new energy and vitality to the job," Davis said.
That was how Tucker and Tucker's son Sam Tucker Jr. remember Hall. The younger
Tucker said that Hall was from Memphis, Tenn. Home Depot's resistance to the
investigation has the family very unhappy. The elder Tucker used to be a big
investor in Home Depot. He's livid. That's just offensive. Tucker said he had
gone to the circus with Hall on Sunday. He said that as he drove his sister
Sabrina Hall home from the hospital she had panic attacks each time she saw a
truck. Mr. Tucker said Michael was one of the nicest, most decent people I have
ever known. The family had not yet made funeral arrangements for Hall as of
Tuesday evening.

Mr. Wesley Moore Steele, 68, of Griffin, passed away Monday, March 8, 2004. Mr.
Steele was born in Spalding County on June 30, 1935 to the late Ira Steele and
the late Jennie V. Moore Steele. He was a member of Vineyard Baptist Church.
Survivors include his son, Kenny Steele; sister, Eddie Naomi Bransford,
Thomaston; brother, Johnny Steele of Jonesboro; aunt, Hilda Pass, Griffin;
several nieces and nephews and great nieces and great nephews.
Funeral services for Mr. Wesley Moore Steele will be conducted on Thursday,
March 11, 2004 at 11:30 a.m. in the chapel of Conner-Westbury Funeral Home. The

Mr. Herbert B. LaRue, 71, of Lake City, passed away Friday, March 12, 2004. Mr.
LaRue was a retired Dental Laboratory Technician and was the former owner and
operator of Dental Service Laboratory in Lake City, Ga. He was a former Boy
Scout Leader for Troop 912, a member of The Masonic Lodge in Forest Park, The
Eastern Star and the Yaarab Shrine Temple. Funeral services will take

Ruby Lucille Shirley Mills, 81, formerly of Clayton County, died Thursday, March
11, 2004, in St. Petersburg, Fla.
Born in Belton, S.C., she moved to St. Petersburg in 1996 from Clayton County,
where she was Tax Commissioner for 16 years, retiring in 1993. She was a member
of the Business Professional Women of Clayton County, and was an active
volunteer for the American Cancer Society. An avid golfer, she was a member of
the Lake Spivey Country Club. In St. Petersburg she was a member of First
Presbyterian Church. She was predeceased by her husband, William E. Mills, and a
brother, William Harold Shirley. Survivors include her son, William E. Mills of
St. Petersburg; sisters, Virginia S. Ewing of Fayetteville, Ga. and Elizabeth

Dean Young of McDonough died Saturday, March 13, 2004. He was a tax attorney in
the Henry County area. He is preceded in death by his father Marion "Dutch"
Young. He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Terry Young; daughter Lauren

CAMILLI (Len)
Mr. Leonard Francis Camilli (Len), age 77, of Stockbridge died Thursday, March
18, 2004, at his residence in the presence of his dear ones, friends and family.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn Whiddon Camilli in 1999. Len was
born Dec. 3 1926, in Summit, N.J., son of the late Mary Barnis and Peter Camilli.
He attended Rutgers University, and after serving in the Army Air Force
graduated from Seton Hall University with honors. He was part of the first group
to establish and utilize computers in the textile industry at J.P. Stevens
Woolen Mills and later was Director of Purchasing at Forstmann Worsted and
Woolens until retirement. Marilyn and Len were devoted parents. He believed in
Christian stewardship and lived a dedicated and a productive spiritual life of
service in the Roman Catholic Church in the diocese of Charlotte, N.C. Here in
McDonough at the St. James The Apostle Catholic Parish he was an RCIA team
member, led classes and retreats for adults coming into the Catholic Church,
served on its Advancement Commission, and loved its congregation. His
experiences in the Curcillo movement prepared and motivated him for such
leadership. He also was a Knight of Columbus, Council 7601, and a member of the
Regional Board of the George State Mental Health Commission. He enjoyed golf,
and only a short month before his death he and his twin brother John spent a
weekend in Florida golfing. A funeral Mass for Mr. Camilli will be Monday, March
22 at 11 a.m. at St. James Catholic Church in McDonough with Msgr. Terry W.
Young as celebrant. Survivors include his daughters and son-in-law, Elizabeth
Camilli, Jean Camilli and Mary Lynne and Edward Berg, all of Stockbridge;
sister, Mary Ann Johnson of Berkeley Heights, N.J.; brothers, John and Maureen
Camilli of Burton, Mich. and Philip Camilli of New Providence, N.J.;
sister-in-law, Virlin Phillips of Tifton, Ga.; brother-in-law, Frank Castagna of

HENLEY
Gordon E. Henley, age 68, of McDonough died Friday, March 19, 2004. Mr. Henley,
recipient of a heart transplant in 1996, was a valued member of the transplant
community. He served the St. Joseph's Heart Transplant Association as its
President in 1998. Gordon also participated, along with 40 others from St.
Joseph's in the Transplant Olympics held annually at various locations across
the nation. He was a major contributor to "Going Out," an organ donor
recruitment program utilizing DMV registration and donor education programs in
the schools. Gordon also spearheaded the formation of the "Around-Town Dinners."
These quarterly events provided a forum for transplant families to share their
experiences. Celebration of the life of Gordon E. Henley will take place at 2
p.m. Sunday, March 21 in the Chapel of Cannon-Cleveland Funeral Directors, 2580
Highway 42 North, McDonough, Ga. with the Rev. Tracey Smith and the Rev. Buddy
Norton officiating. Interment will follow the service at Fairview Memorial

of 19 years, Geraldine (Coviello) Henley; son, Barry E. Henley; and 3 brothers,

Malane Allred Woodward, Baptist, of Riverdale, Ga., formerly of Columbus, Ga.,
passed away March 21, 2004.
She will be missed by her family, who describes her as a loving mother, taking
note of the 52 years she devoted her life to their sister, Trish. She was
preceded in death by her son, Harold "Buddy" Woodward, Jr. and her brother,
Cecil Allred. Survivors include her former husband, Harold Woodward Sr.;
daughters, Patricia Ann "Trish" Woodward of Riverdale, Cathe Woodward Watson and
Richard of Columbus, and Sherrilyn Woodward Kenyon and Lawrence of Tennessee;

John Carter Willits, 65, of Southermill Overlook Blairsville, passed away on
Friday, March 26, 2004, at his home following an extended illness. Willits was
born May 9, 1938, in Hillsdale, Mich., the son of the late Howard Willits and
the late Muriel Carter Willits. He was a member of the ATO, Georgia Bar
Association, a former member of the Riverdale Bass Club, a member of the Georgia
Bass Federation and a fundraiser for Boy Scouts of America. He was an attorney
where he had practiced real estate law in Jonesboro for more than 27 years. He
had a great passion for fishing. He and his sons had taken many fishing trips to
Lunding, Mich., Canada and Alaska. He was preceded in death by a brother, James
Howard Willits. Willits was a member of the First United Methodist Church of
Union County. Surviving are his loving wife of 38 years, Sharon Lee Olson
Willits of Blairsville; two sons and one daughter-in-law; James and Charlene
Willits of McDonough, John Willits of Scottsdale, Ariz.; two grandchildren,
Aaron Lunsford and Benjamin Rust; many other relatives and friends also survive.
Memorial services will be held Friday, April 2, 2004, at 2 p.m. from the First
United Methodist Church with the Rev. Eddie Herring officiating. Special music
