HAMMETT
Mr. James Alonzo Hammett, age 75, of Jonesboro, died Wednesday, March 31, 2004,
after a lengthy battle with Parkinson and dementia. He was a devoted husband,
father, and friend, and was loved and respected by everyone. Mr. Hammett was
born and raised in Morrow, Ga. He was a member of Morrow First Baptist, where he
served as both a Sunday school teacher and a deacon. HE SERVED IN THE KOREAN
WAR. Mr. Hammett worked for 20 years as a chemist and then as a general building
superintendent before retiring from Clayton County as a building code inspector.
Funeral services will take place at 2 p.m. today, Friday, April 2, with the body
to lie in state at 1 p.m. at First Baptist Morrow. Interment will follow in
Jonesboro City Cemetery. Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Patricia; sons
and daughters-in-law, Brad and Sherry Hammett of Jonesboro and Greg and Carol
Hammett of Brooks; daughters and sons-in-law, Terrie and Lang Thomas of Roswell
and Sherri and Brian Hannon of Lilburn; grandchildren, Ashley, Chrissy, Jeffrey,
Lindsay, Cally, Haley, Michael, Kaylee and Elijah. Southside Chapel Funeral

BAILEY
Patricia Bailey, age 70, of Stockbridge, passed away Friday, April 2, 2004.
Patricia Bailey will be remembered as a devoted wife, loving and nurturing
mother and grandmother, and loyal friend. Those privileged to have loved her can
take comfort in a life well lived. Mrs. Bailey is a long-time member of
Jonesboro Christian Church and a member of Calvary Christian Church. Funeral
services will take place at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 4 at Ward's Fairview Chapel
with Garry Gable officiating. Interment will follow at Fairview Memorial Gardens
with Hank Melton officiating the graveside service. Survivors include her sons,
James Thomas Bailey Jr. of Stockbridge and Paul Clemons and Cheryle Bailey of
Riverdale; grandson and his wife, Jeffrey Paul and Shay Bailey; granddaughter
and her husband, Shannon Elain and Craig Osborn; great-grandchildren, Kyle and
Madison Bailey; sister, Marion Langman; brothers, James Williams and Thomas
Williams. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. today (Saturday) at
the funeral home.

CHEEK
Paula Elise Cheek of Senoia, Ga. died at home after a long battle with breast
cancer, Friday, April 2, 2004.
Paula was a talented educator, having spent 15 years as a kindergarten teacher
at Kirkpatrick Elementary School in Clayton County, and three years as a second
grade teacher at Peeples Elementary School in Fayette County. She was named
Teacher of the Year for Kirkpatrick in 1994. As the heart and soul of her
family, she will be mourned. As a light to so many, she will live on. A funeral
Mass will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 5 at Saint George Catholic
Church in Newnan, Ga. Survivors include her husband George and daughters Laura
Lovell of Jonesboro, Melanie Cain of Orlando, Fla., Suzanne Schultz of Newnan,
and Mary Catherine Bizieff of Apex, N.C.; five beloved grandchildren, Charlie
and Richard Lovell, Elise Schultz, and Patrick and Samuel Bizieff. She is also
survived by her father and mother, Paul and Elise Keel of LaGrange, Ga.; sister,
Barbara Lipe of Douglasville, Ga.; brother, George Baine Keel of LaGrange.
Visitation will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, April 4 at Mowell Funeral
Home in Fayetteville. The family request that in lieu of flowers donations are

SPEARMAN
Joann Spearman, 63, of Griffin, formerly of Riverdale, died Saturday, April 3,
2004, at the Christian Ministries Hospice. Spearman was born in Calhoun, Ga., on
July 13, 1940, to the late Dee Wood and the late Mildred Buffington Wood. She
was a homemaker and a member of the Kenwood Baptist Church in Fayetteville.
Survivors include husband Bobby G. Spearman; daughter and son-in-law Janet S.
and Michael Stringer; grandchildren Jason Fitts, Lauren Stringer, Michael
Stringer, all of Griffin; brother and sister-in-law Dwight and Helen Wood of
Calhoun; niece Heather Wood; nephew Christopher Wood. Funeral services for Joann
Spearman will be conducted Tuesday, April 6, 2004, at 1 p.m. at Kenwood Baptist
Church in Fayetteville. Interment will follow in the Forest Hills in Forest
Park. Friends may visit the family on Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral

DAVIS
Jackie Orlanda Davis, 68, of Jonesboro, died Friday, April 2, 2004. He was a
member of the Jonesboro First United Methodist Church. He is survived by his
wife Miriam Hood Davis and son Robert Brian Davis of Granbury, Texas; sister and
brother-in-law Dorothy and Bobby Hubbard of Lilburn; grandchildren Amber and
Kayla Davis; nieces and spouses Sandra and Max Mayfield of Conyers, and Jan and
Darren Hodge of Lawrenceville; stepchildren and stepgrandchildren. Funeral
services will be Monday, April 5, 2004, at 11 a.m. from the Chapel of
Ford-Stewart Funeral Home with the Rev. Jerry Newton officiating. Interment will

CUNNINGHAM
Stanley Harding Cunningham, 42, of Jonesboro, died Friday, April 2, 2004. He is
survived by parents Charles and Florence Cunningham of Jonesboro; sister
Charlynn Richardson of Augusta; and brothers Charles Bradford Cunningham of
Conyers and John Michael Cunningham of Ellenwood; as well as nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Monday, April 5, 2004, at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of
Ford-Stewart Funeral Home with Dr. Ronny Spillers and Dr. Steve Bingham
officiating. Interment will take place at College Park Cemetery. In lieu of

ROSS
Mr. Gary E. Ross, 56, of Stockbridge, passed away Sunday, April 4, 2004, after a
long battle with cancer.
MR. ROSS SERVED IN THE UNITED STATES AIR FORCE, retiring with 20 years of
service. Following his retirement from the armed services Mr. Ross joined the
Clayton County Sheriff's Office. He then retired from the Sheriff's Office with
11 years of service. Funeral services will take place at 1 p.m. Wednesday, April
7 with Pastor Ken Fuqua and Pastor Scott Reece officiating. Interment will
follow at Fairview Memorial Gardens in Stockbridge.
Survivors include his loving wife of 38 years, Mrs. Nancy Ross; son, Brian K.
Ross; daughter, Gretta Dobbs; brothers, Larry Midget and Dennis Ross; sisters,
Deborah Clark and Lisa Edwards; grandchildren, Jacqueline Ross, Brannon Dobbs
and Taylor Dobbs. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.

Ray "Bobo" Harshbarger, 51, of Morrow, passed away Monday, April 5, 2004, at
Southern Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m.
Friday, April 9 at Pope Dickson & Son Morrow Chapel.
Survivors include his mother, Joann Harshbarger; sisters, Iris Joan Buck, Debbie
A. Harshbarger, Robbie McElwaney and Linda H. Quick; children, Jamie Rhea
Matthews, Kathie Leah Wilmote and Casie Pittman; six grandchildren; several

Mrs. Margaret Lee Strickland of East Point died Tuesday, April 6, 2004, in
LaFayette Nursing Home in Fayetteville.

Kay and Ron Howerton of Jonesboro; granddaughter, Marlo and Dr. Sanford Hawkins

Mr. Carroll "CC" Sweatman, 78, of Forest Park, passed away Wednesday, April 7,
2004, at Emory Hospital.

his wife, Elizabeth "Betty" Sweatman; sons, Craig B. Sweatman and Brian C.

YOUNGBLOOD
Mr. Willard M. Youngblood, 81, of Jonesboro, died Wednesday, April 7, 2004. Mr.
Youngblood was a graduate of Auburn University and taught for Clayton County
Board of Education, and served as principal of Ash Street Elementary School in
Forest Park. HE WAS A VETERAN OF WORLD WAR II, SERVING IN THE UNITED STATES
ARMY. Mr. Youngblood was a member of First Baptist Church of Morrow, and former
member of Ash Street Baptist Church. Funeral services will take place at 2 p.m.
Friday, April 9 at First Baptist Church of Morrow. Interment will follow in
Forest Hills Memorial Gardens. Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Frances
T. Youngblood; children, Mr. and Mrs. Marc Wiggins of Marietta and Mr. and Mrs.
Willard O. Youngblood of Jacksonville, Ala.; sisters, Faye Flowers of Thomaston,
Ga. and Bette Hall of Birmingham, Ala.; brother, Thomas Youngblood of Valley,
Ala.; numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8
