Clayton County Obits
April 1894
The Griffin Weekly News and Sun, Griffin Ga.
Issue of April 27, 1894
While news was somewhat scarce yesterday, yet we
were pained to learn of the death of our old friend J. Jimplecute Jones,
of Clayton County, which occurred on the banks of the Flint River on Sunday.
Friends found him late in the afternoon hanging by one leg over the river and
very dead indeed. It was found that he had run his fishing-line over a limb
and tied it to his leg for security. A hundred and fifty pound cat fish had
seized the hood while he was asleep and promptly pulled Mr. Jones up, holding
him there until dead. Fortunately the fish was found still on the hook in a
neighboring pool, so that while Mr. Jones' fate points a moral to Sunday
fishermen his family nevertheless have fish to eat for several days.
