CLEVELAND Elena C. Cleveland, 88, of Jonesboro, died Saturday, Aug. 30, 2003. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Jonesboro and Saints Alive. She is survived by her husband, Hurshal Cleveland of Jonesboro; daughter, Carmen C. Martin of Greensboro; son, William L. Cleveland of Ellenwood; brother, Luis Ullrich of Gainesville; sister, Alma Kadel of Homosassa, Fla.; sister-in-law, Sylvia Ullrich of Norcross; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Funeral services will be Tuesday, Sept. 2, at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Jonesboro Worship Center, with Dr. Dean Haun officiating. AUSTIN Doris S. Austin, 68, of Jonesboro, died Aug. 30, 2003. MASSENGALE Maxine Elizabeth (Bramlett) Massengale, 78, of Jonesboro, died Aug. 30, 2003. She was a retired cafeteria worker with the Clayton County School System. She was preceded in death by her husband, James E. Massengale, and son, Billy Massengale. Surviving are son and daughter-in-law James B. and Debbie Massengale of Jonesboro; daughter Dale Head of Jonesboro; brothers, Rev. CARVER Jimmy Carver, 49 of Rex, died Aug. 30, 2003. Carver was employed by ABF Freight for 29 years. An avid outdoorsman and a devoted family man, he was known for enjoying making people laugh and putting others before himself. Carver is survived by his loving wife of 29 years, Vickie Carver of Rex; son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Cheri Carver of Rex; mother-in-law Joann Morgan of Rex; mother Hazel Carver; brothers Shane and Randy; sisters Carolyn, Debbie and Jane; brother and sister-in-law Randy and Paige Hewell; and several nieces and nephews. WALLACE Susie Wallace, 78, of Stockbridge, died Sunday morning, Aug. 31, 2003, at her home after an extended illness. Wallace was born in Smith County, Mississippi, in 1924, to Napoleon and Oma Jones. During World War II, she worked in Mobile, Ala., as a "Rosie the Riveter" in Brookley Field at an airplane manufacturing plant. It was there that she met her husband. Following her husband's career in the airline industry, they moved to the Atlanta area in 1959. After Mr. Wallace's death, she moved to Stockbridge to live with her daughter Mary. Although Wallace's interest in life was her family, she worked for and retired from Richway Department Store. She was a member of the Fayetteville Church of Christi. A kind and loving mother and grandmother, she will be greatly missed by all of her family and friends. She is preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Paul M. Wallace. She is survived by a son, Mark Wallace and his wife Debbie of McDonough; three daughters, Ruth Dykes and her husband Clint of Valdosta, Mary Clark and her husband James of Stockbridge, and Bonnie Maddox of Roswell; a sister, Grace Barr of Jackson, Miss.; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and many friends. A graveside service will be held at Sherwood Memorial Park at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2003, on Tara Boulevard in Jonesboro, with the Revs. Virgil Richie and Mike McCullough officiating. Ms. Jackson was a member of St. Philip Benizi Catholic Church, and also a member

Fred L. Betsill Sr., 65, of Jonesboro,
died Monday, Sept. 8, 2003. He was a son of the late Barney and Agnes
Betsill of Hampton, and was preceded in death by his oldest son, Fred L. Betsill
Jr. ("Sonny"). Mr. Betsill was the owner of Betsill's Amoco Service in
McDonough, was a long-time member of First Baptist Church of Jonesboro, and was
a very avid golfer. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday,
Sept. 10 at First Baptist Church of Jonesboro, with Dr. H. Dean Haun
officiating. Interment will follow at Fairview Memorial Gardens. Survivors
include his wife of 46 years, DeeDee; daughter, Debra Lee (Barry) Campbell of
Stockbridge; son, Jeffrey Scott (Sue) Betsill of Stockbridge; grandchildren,

Mr. Grady Allen Quick, age 85, of Jonesboro, passed away Monday, Sept. 8, 2003,
at his residence. Mr. Quick was born in Coweta County Aug. 2, 1918, to the
late Jesse Lee Quick and the late Ludie Mae Bunn Quick. He is preceded in death
by his daughter, Betty Smith, grandson, David Davis, granddaughter, Sonya Smith,
brothers, Harvey L. Quick, Loyd C. Quick, and James F. Quick. He was a retired
sawmill owner. He was a member of the Teamon Baptist Church and A VETERAN OF THE
UNITED STATES NAVY, HAVING SERVED IN WORLD WAR II. Funeral services will
be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 11 in the Chapel of the Conner-Westbury
Funeral Home, with Dr. Lavon Womack officiating. Interment will follow in the

Southern Regional Medical Center.
HE SERVED IN THE U.S. ARMY AIR CORPS AS A BOMBARDIER DURING WORLD WAR II,
and had retired from Southern Railway after 30 years of service. A chapel
service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13. Interment will follow at

Mrs. Mildred Aline NORWOOD, age 85, of
Griffin, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2003, at her residence.
Mrs. Norwood was born in Clayton County April 22, 1918, to the late James
Shierling and the late Frances Archer Shierling, wife of the late Edward Howard
Norwood. Mrs. Norwood was formerly employed as a seamstress with Briarcliff
Mill. She was a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church in Morrow. Graveside
services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 19 in Westview Cemetery in
Atlanta, with the Rev. Tommy Aman officiating. Survivors include her daughter
and son-in-law, Jeanette and Jerry Wilson of Griffin; grandson, David Wilson of
Jonesboro; granddaughter, Tracy and Mark Hatcher of Griffin;
great-grandchildren, Bradley, Kayla, and Andrew Hatcher; sister, Mattie Williams

2003, at her residence.
She was born July 2, 1947, in Chattooga County, Ga., was a homemaker and a

Mr. Thomas "Tom" AGNEW
Jr., age 73, of Stockbridge, passed away Thursday, Sept. 18, 2003. He
was preceded in death by his wife of 40 years, Jene H. Agnew, a son, Thomas J.
Agnew III, and a daughter, Angela Agnew. Funeral services will be held at
11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 22 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints,
Stockbridge, with Brother Doug Hall officiating. Entombment will follow at
Forest Hills Cemetery. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law,

Ellen Akin BELL of McDonough went home to be with the Lord Thursday,
Sept. 18, 2003. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church of
Jonesboro, and the Sunday School class taught by her dear friend, Jane Abel. The
members of this class were some of her closest and dearest friends. Ellen served
as treasurer of this class, and actively worked with the Bereavement Care Group.
She used her considerable talent as a cook to feed many families at the church
and to provide food for the Homeless Shelter to which they ministered.
Also dear to her heart were her friends from Colonial Hills Baptist Church,
formerly in East Point, where she was a member before moving to McDonough in
1982. Funeral services were held Saturday, Sept. 20, 2003, at 11 a.m. in
the chapel of the Ford-Stewart Funeral Home in Jonesboro. Dr. Dean Haun, pastor
of the First Baptist Church of Jonesboro, presided. A brief interment service
was held at the Holly Hills Memorial Gardens in Fairburn, with Hinton Harris
presiding. Ellen now resides in glory with her Lord Jesus Christ. She
leaves to cherish her memory her husband of 45 years, Harold Bell; daughter,
Dianne Cowan; son, David, and his wife, Stacy Bell; stepdaughter, Brenda, and
her husband, Jerry Thomas; grandchildren, Heather, and her husband, Rob Balsam,
Shanna Cowan, Elizabeth Cowan, Damon, and his wife, Beth Thomas, Jenni, and her
husband, Brandon Zink; brother, Reeves, and his wife, Jane Akin; eight nephews;
four nieces; five other sisters-in-law; and a host of much-loved friends.

78, of Riverdale, died Sept. 20, 2003. Vaughn was preceded in death by her
husband, Harley Calvin Vaughn, and a son, Harley Wilson Vaughn. Survivors

(Michael) Williams of Austell, and Jane (Eddie) Reagin of McDonough; one son,

77, of Jonesboro, died Sept. 19, 2003. JONES WAS A VETERAN OF WORLD WAR II
WHERE HE SERVED IN THE U.S. NAVY. He was also a member of Faith United Methodist
Church, the United Methodist Men's Club and the Masons. He was preceded in
death by his wife Virginia Christine Jones. Survivors include two daughters, Jo
Anne (Tony) Napier of Jonesboro and Joyce Carol (Jeff) Lindler of Newnan; three
